    Measuring Plant Size and Growth
    Objective

To use paper strip records and data about plant size to compare plants and determine how much plants grew during different intervals.
    Lessons

Lesson 1. How much did the plant grow between Day 1 and Day 15?

Lesson 2. Which plant grew more from Day 1 to Day 28?

    Children's Thinking

Students made good progress in measurement during these activities. At the beginning of the unit, they were not at all familiar with using or reading rulers. They came to understand some principles of measure by using loose units to measure the paper plant strips and differences. Some children had difficulty lining up units accurately, mostly because the units shifted during the process. This problem was solved by students who lined up the paper strips and mounted them next to each other. When measuring differences, a few students were not sure how to deal with fractional units-some said "about" and others said "a half" for any fractional part. While we know that children need to learn more about measure, this unit provided a good introductory experience.
