    Drawing and writing about journals
    Objective

To encourage students to keep detailed records of change and notice different kinds of change in growing organisms.
    Lesson

Throughout the lessons, students made journal entries that included drawings and writing about the changes they noticed as the bulbs grew. Each observation day, they also recorded questions generated.

    Children's Thinking

In their journals, students recorded their observations of changes in plant size, color, features and position. Many drawings showed good detail of such features as buds, flowers, and even spots that were on the stems and buds. It was possible to determine flowering dates for each bulb from the students' journals. Children's written entries were usually brief; they noted changes since their most recent observation. Their questions were usually related to changes they had just observed, or to predictions about coming events in the life cycle.
