Project Summary |
The primary objective of my research is to understand the mechanism behind the infrared inhibition of action potentials in unmyelinated nerves. To achieve this goal, I develop and analyze results generated by computer models (a combination of an optical-thermal tissue model with a temperature dependent neural simulator) that provides us an understanding of the mechanisms behind infrared nerve inhibition. The mechanisms predicted using computer models are consistent across different animal model systems having unmyelinated nerves. The computer models helps us in evaluating a preliminary design for a nerve cuff for inhibition of nerve signals, especially pain signals in C fibers.
