Automated instrument-tracking and adaptive sampling

    Project Summary

Intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) enables real-time volumetric imaging of ophthalmic surgical maneuvers and benefits clinical decision-making. Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of iOCT for guiding surgery, but are limited by static field-of-views. The goal is to present a method for automated instrument-tracking to dynamically adjust OCT imaging. The aims of my project are to: (1) Develop a system for automated instrument-tracking using a combination of deep-learning and SECTR imaging, (2) perform instrument-tracking in retinal phantoms and ex vivo animal eyes,(3) design a SECTR system that may be used for tracking in a clinical setting. Automated instrument tracking will be performed by combining SECTR imaging and deep-learning. Data for training a convolutional neural network will be obtained in retinal phantoms and ex vivo animal eyes. A system will then be designed for in vivo surgical tracking.
