Microbes, like bacteria and yeast, are very small. Although it is not possible to see single microbes by eye, they account for the majority of the earth's biomass and are fundamentally important for many processes (like decomposition and digestion). Understanding microscopic scales complements children's everyday experiences with events and objects that they can easily observe.
