Alphabet Soup Seminar
The Alphabet Soup Seminar is offered regularly to inform hiring officials about their obligations under federal and state nondiscrimination laws. It covers an array of topics such as diversity in the workplace, sexual harassment, the Americans with Disabilities Act and Vanderbilt’s Affirmative Action Program. It also covers pertinent Vanderbilt policies, administrative responsibilities and procedures. The seminar concludes with a panel comprised of representatives from employee relations, general counsel, and EOA. The panel is to give participants an opportunity to ask questions concerning EEO related issues.
Little Things Mean a Lot Workshop
The Little Things Mean a Lot Workshop is designed to help participants explore their personal biases and why they may have them. The session is typically presented by two co-facilitators who help participants understand the importance of accepting and appreciating others at the workplace. Learning about Micro-inequities, micro-aggressions micro affirmations is part of the discussion. The premise is that once biases are known, one can work towards thinking and treating people more favorably.
Disability 101 Workshop
The Disability 101 Workshop gives an overview of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). It provides hiring officials and supervisors key tools in deciding whether an employee has a disability under the ADA, how a disability may affect an employee’s essential job functions and gives guidance on what to do if that is the case. It also explores the parameters around providing a reasonable accommodation and offers tips for interviewing persons with disabilities.
