Both androids revel in serving their master, but Luke and R2 seem to have a special relationship. One critic states “R2D2 is like a clever dog, insistent on being with his master, Luke, no matter how dangerous the circumstances; C-3PO, on the other hand, is all effete worry” (Schelde 159). For example, R2 accompanies Luke on his special mission to destroy the Death Star, despite the layout of the X-wing fighter relegating R2 to the rear of the ship where he is shot by Imperial blasters . Luke receives the glory for destroying the Imperial battle station, yet the celebration ceases for a few moments while Luke inspects the severe damage inflicted on R2. Lucas reveals one final glimpse of R2 and LukeÂ’s friendship during the medal ceremony in the final scene. By placing the androids on stage, Lucas highlights their importance to the rebel alliance and Luke. When Luke receives his medal from Leia, R2 beeps excitedly and bobbles around to show his pride for his master. Clearly, Lucas establishes his androids as quite human-like with amiable characteristics in the first movie of the trilogy.
