At the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas has positioned Luke as the hero of the rebel force, yet his emotional character remains undeveloped. Luke successfully fights off the Imperial attack on Hoth; however, when he reaches the Degabah System, Luke again exhibits his lack of emotional growth. Yoda repeatedly attempts to teach Luke the abilities of a jedi knight, yet Lukes youthfulness resists Yodas instructions. Luke retains doubts about the power of the Force which Yoda must abolish. Lukes weak effort to raise the X-wing fighter out of the swamp proves his weak and naive mind, for Yoda easily accomplishes what Luke deems impossible. Also, Luke feels disturbed when entering the section of Degabah strong in the Dark Side of the Force, but he underestimates the meaning of his battle with the imaginary Darth Vader. After slaying the apparition, Lukes own face appears inside Vaders mask, and Luke responds with shock and confusion. This scene foreshadows Lukes temptation to the Dark Side and the revelation of the true identity of his father, but Luke foolishly pays little attention to the incident. Finally, Luke leaves Degabah early because he fears Han and Leia are in trouble. He falls into Darth Vaders trap out of concern for friends. As a result of his youthful immaturity, he places himself, and the success of the rebellion, at risk.
