In order to establish Darth Vader’s identity as a cyborg, Lucas must also reveal the mechanical aspects of VaderÂ’s body. In VaderÂ’s first appearance during the opening scenes of Star Wars, the labored breathing that exposes his human qualities also suggests that Vader breaths through a machine. The pace of VaderÂ’s breathing remains constant throughout the Trilogy, even when he becomes anxious. VaderÂ’s voice also sounds electronically altered which suggests he requires a machine to speak also. The control panel consisting of a few buttons and lights on the chest of VaderÂ’s black suit also exhibits his dependency upon the breathing and voice machines. Finally, in Return of the Jedi, Luke and Vader battle with their light sabers in the EmperorÂ’s chambers. During the struggle, Luke severs VaderÂ’s right arm; however, instead of bleeding, the wires and circuits which control VaderÂ’s hand become exposed, revealing that machines control more than just his breathing and voice. Evidently, Lucas must have intended to cast Vader as a cyborg by mixing his identity of both human and mechanical components.
