Lucas continues his characterization of the androids as friendly in The Empire Strikes Back. After the rebels realize that both Han and Luke must spend the evening outside the base in the frozen environment of Hoth, the androids worry about Luke’s fate. Even after C-3PO takes refuge in the warmth of the base, R2 remains outside searching for Luke with radar. When the security doors close for the evening, the rebels realize that the chances of Luke and Han surviving through the night are slim; thus, as the large steel doors close and lock, a sense of despair and loss overcomes the androids as they mourn over the presumed loss of their master. Clearly, with intense devotion to the rebellion and each other, R2 and C-3PO seem to share more characteristics with humans than machines.
