Performing dilutions
One important consideration when preparing a diluted solution is how much of the stock solution to use, and how much solvent should be added to the stock solution in order to obtain the desired concentration of solute in the diluted solution. To calculate the amount of the stock solution that we need as well as the amount of additional solvent that needs to be added, we use equation (1);
(1) M1V1 = M2V2
where M1 and M2 are the initial and final molarity, respectively, and V1 and V2 are the initial and final volume.
