Performing dilutions
A more accurate way to prepare a solution of low concentration is through the use of serial dilutions of a stock solution (an initial solution of high concentration). For example, if you needed 1-L of a 1.0 X 10-5 M solution, you could prepare 100 mL of a 1.0 M NaOH solution, and dilute a small portion of this stock solution with additional solvent until a 1.0 X 10-5 M solution is obtained. This is done by taking an accurate volume of the stock solution using a volumetric pipet and adding it to a volumetric flask. The volumetric flask is then filled to the mark with the desired solvent to obtain the diluted solution.
