Surgeon and Engineer Collaborations in Cerebrovascular Disease: Past Successes and Future  Opportunities
Speaker:  J. D. Mocco, MD, Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery
Date: Thursday, July 25th
Time:  11:50 Social, Noon Seminar Start
Place:  Stevenson Center, 5326

Abstract:

We will review the recent results of engineer/clinician collaborations in improving understanding of cerebrovascular disease pathophysiology, as well as in the development of novel  technologies used to improve cerebrovascular disease treatment. We will highlight (1) the use of computational fluid dynamic analysis in identifying a crucial, and yet simple, new metric to predict the rupture potential of an intra-cranial aneurysm, (2) collaboration in the development of a novel stent to treat intra-cranial aneurysms, and (3) the creation of an adjective technology to aid in thrombectomy to treat acute ischemic stroke. Lastly, we will posit new directions potentially worth evaluation in the treatment of prevalent diseases that currently lack viable treatment strategies.
