Title:
AI-integrated point of care ultrasound imaging for decentralized healthcare
Abstract:
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for 71% of all deaths worldwide. Within the next two decades, the global economic burden of NCDs is expected to be US $47 trillion. People with chronic NCDs often face several challenges in accessing healthcare, resulting in an increased risk of mortality. Affordable, available, and accessible health care is needed to address the ever-increasing burden of NCDs. To provide a solution to this unmet need, our research focuses on a more modular, responsive, and decentralized imaging model based on point of care ultrasound (POCUS). During the talk I will discuss how we are integrating AI-methods to overcome some of the challenges of POCUS such as low image quality, limited availability of data, and compute efficient algorithm design.

Ultrasound Technology and AI for Healthcare (ULTRAi) research laboratory is focused on developing innovative artificial intelligence (AI) systems for neurosurgery, liver and kidney disease, orthopedic surgery, musculoskeletal disorders (MSD),  lung disease, brain health, and interventional radiology. With a long-standing track record of working collaboratively with clinicians, our research aims to diminish the gap between engineering research and clinical research and bring technologies from bench-to-bed-side. One of the most exciting areas our group is interested in is the deployment of AI-enabled point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) imaging in out-of-hospital settings to provide affordable, accessible, and connected healthcare for all.
