The Vanderbilt Medical & Electromechanical Design lab is a partner on a grant recently awarded by the Korean government to the Korea Institute of Science and Technology entitled “Development of Next-Generation Micro Surgical Robot Based on Open Platform”.  The purpose of the work is to develop a surgical robotic system with steerable end effectors for spine surgery. In contrast to current commercial systems, the new robot is intended to be low cost, and have an open architecture, allowing others to build upon it collaboratively. The University of Washington is also a project partner, and the project duration will be five years.
