STORM Lab Hydrojet Team wins Best Overall Award at the Surgical Robot Challenge 2016
The Science and Technology of Robotics in Medicine (STORM) Lab Hydrojet Team won Best Overall Award at the Surgical Robot Challenge 2016 for the Hamlyn Symposium of Medical Robotics. The international competition, held at the Imperial College in London, showcases the latest developments in Surgical Robotics. STORM Lab’s project “Low-cost gastric cancer screening in low income country” also won Best Application Award. The goal of this new technology is to enable ultra-low-cost gastric cancer screening in remote and rural areas of low-income countries.
Twelve teams from around the world competed in the challenge, and the best experts in the field composed the judging panel, including VISE affiliate Robert J. Webster III. The research teams had three hours to set up their surgical robot and demonstrate their innovation to the panel. The teams then proceeded to give formal presentations followed by a Q&A of technical and clinical questions about their work.
The STORM Lab team was composed of Vanderbilt graduate research assistant Federico Campisano; Polytechnic of Milan master student Francesco Gramuglia; University of Twente master student Imro Dawson; VISE affiliate Pietro Valdastri, former assistant professor of mechanical engineering, now professor of robotics and autonomous systems at the University of Leeds; Vanderbilt medical student Michelle Ismailovitz; Doug Morgan, associate professor of medicine gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition; and VISE affiliate Keith L. Obstein, associate professor of medicine gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.
