Overview
Rafael is a member of the class of 2026 majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a Minor in Nanotechnology who joined VINSE as a user in Spring 2024 and Tech Crew in the summer of 2024. In addition to Tech Crew, he has taken classes with lab components inside the VINSE cleanroom. In addition to Tech Crew responsibilities, he is working on developing graphene electronics for research and procedural optimizations as well as demo samples for high school outreach events. With interests in nanostructures, semiconductors, electromagnetic properties of 2D materials, optoelectronics, integrated circuits, energy efficiency and energy production, Rafael jumps onto any project that presents a challenge where outside the box thinking and creative design is encouraged. As a VINSE user, Rafael is currently investigating microfluidics and optical sensing as an avenue for detecting lead contaminated water in sources such as drinking fountains and faucets. He has a strong interest in pursuing both research and pedagogical positions where he can implement new techniques and help redefine how STEM is taught at all levels. Outside the cleanroom, Rafael is a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Radio Club. He also enjoys playing soccer, cooking, baking, and creative writing.
