Eric Skaar, PhD, MPH, awarded the 2025 National Academy of Sciences Award in Molecular Biology

Eric Skaar, PhD, MPH, director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Infection, Immunology and Inflammation, has been awarded the 2025 National Academy of Sciences Award in Molecular Biology for his pioneering research at the intersection of nutrition and infectious diseases. His work focuses on the host-pathogen battle for essential metals like iron and zinc, offering new insights into how we might better treat bacterial infections. This prestigious recognition highlights the significant contributions Skaar and his team have made to the field of nutritional immunity. Skaar’s 2023 Nature paper featured nanoscale elemental maps collected using VINSE’s Tecnai Osiris Analytical TEM/STEM and cryo-electron tomography samples prepared using VINSE’s Helios cryo-FIB-SEM.
