October 9 is the National Nano Day! This annual event features community-led events and activities on or around October 9 to help raise awareness of nanotechnology, its use in products that enrich our daily lives, and the challenges and opportunities for the future.
This date, 10/9, pays homage to the nanometer scale, 10–9 meters.
To celebrate this, VINSE exhibited last weekend at the TN Maker Fest. Hosted by VINSE NanoGuides, attendees participated in four interactive demonstrations on nanoscale making.
Surface Coatings Matter – explore kinetic and magic sand whose behavior was controlled by how the sand’s surface was coated and learned what these surface coatings are used for.
Tiny Pipes Give Giant Results – flow food coloring through tiny pipes, learned how the tiny pipes are made similar to Jello molds to make PDMS microfluidic devices, and how they are used from chemistry to medicine.
Change Surface Structure, Change Behavior – compare how plants with tiny patterns on their leaves or petals interact with water and why these matters for plants, animals, and people.
What’s the Big Deal with Small Patterns – learn how the microchips “brains” of electronic devices are made with tiny stencils, what they look like, and mimicked the process scientists use by making their very own food-based chips with frosting, frosting, and sprinkles for a tasty take on photolithography.
Hosted by the Wond’ry, TN Maker Fest is an indoor event with over 45+ exhibits ranging from art to candle making, to fabrication, to robotics, and more.
Credits to our outstanding team of student volunteers who played an important role in sharing the wonders of nanoscience and showcasing its applications at the nanoscale.
