Sajal Islam has been appointed to the Graduate Student Council (GSC) to represent Interdisciplinary Materials Science. The GSC exists to enhance the overall educational experience at Vanderbilt University by promoting the general welfare and concerns of the Graduate School student body. This is achieved through the creation of new programs and initiatives to provide opportunities for growth and interaction, as well as through communication with the Vanderbilt faculty and administration on behalf of graduate students. The GSC consists of elected representatives, standing committees, and an annually elected executive board. The GSC is a member of the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students (NAGPS). Sajal is a second-year IMS student working with Dr. Ron Schrimpf in the Radiation Effect and Reliability group. His research focuses on wide band gap semiconductors i.e., Ga2O3 and SiC working mechanisms under different radiation sources. He has already published a co-authored paper in the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science on “Low-Energy Ion-Induced Single-Event Burnout in Gallium Oxide Schottky Diodes” and presented his work on SiC in the “Surviving the Night Technology Workshop” at CLPS 2022, Nasa Glenn Research Center. He is currently working with several other student organizations at Vanderbilt including his role as a “Secretary” of the ECE student association and “Event Chair” of the Bangladeshi Student Association. He aspires to build a strong GSC-IMS community through monthly gatherings and newsletters and act as a bridge to disseminate information to improve student life at Vanderbilt.
