“Deterministic inverse design of Tamm plasmon thermal emitters with multi-resonant control” published in Nature Materials has been selected as a VINSE spotlight publication.
About the author: Mingze He is currently a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering under the direction of Dr. Joshua Caldwell. Mingze’s research focuses on engineering the mid-infrared light for bio-sensing and light sources applications. In recently published work carried out in collaboration with researchers at Penn State University and Iowa University, he demonstrated a novel design strategy based on machine learning to efficiently and accurately design infrared light sources with thin-film structure. More specifically, dozens of parameters could be optimized within minutes on a consumer-grade desktop, while previous efforts require months on workstations. Mingze He, Ryan Nolen and collaborators also carried out experimental demonstrations to illustrate the advantages of the platform and algorithm. This thereby enables lithography-free, wafer-scale wavelength-selective light sources that are CMOS compatible for applications such as free-space communications and gas sensing.
