Faculty Spotlight: J. Andrés Gannon (DS 3100/Spring 2024)
This week, we highlight Professor J. Andrés Gannon, Assistant Professor in the Department of
Political Science at Vanderbilt University. He is also a Faculty Affiliate at the Data Science
Institute. In Spring 2024, students can look forward to him teaching DS 3100: Fundamentals of
Data Science.
Professor Gannon’s educational journey began at the University of California, Berkeley, where
he attained his BA in Political Science in 2012. He then furthered his studies at the University of
California, San Diego, earning an MA in Political Science in 2017 and culminating in a PhD in
Political Science in 2021.
His career has seen him hold various esteemed positions. Prior to his current role, he
was a Stanton Nuclear Security Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He has also
contributed as an International Security Program Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Harvard
Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, a Hans J. Morgenthau
Research Fellow at the Notre Dame International Security Center, and a PhD Eisenhower
Defence Fellow at the NATO Defence College.
When asked about his passion for the field, Professor Gannon remarked, “What excites me the
most about the field of data science is its remarkable reach and application across such a broad
array of fields. Whether you’re aiming to make groundbreaking discoveries or just make the
world a better place, data science is a potent tool in your arsenal. In DS 3100, I aim to show how
data isn’t just a subject of study, but an exciting journey for everyone.”
