Opportunities for Capstone Projects and Research Experience
Dr. Rei Ukita, a research faculty member in the Department of Cardiac Surgery specializing in artificial organs, is seeking motivated undergraduate and masters students for capstone projects and/or research experience. This unique opportunity focuses on technological innovations to enhance extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a respiratory support system used for acute respiratory failures and end-stage lung disease patients. The projects will explore the application of machine learning approaches to semi-automate ECMO functions, aiming to reduce cost, complexity, and manual intervention. Graduate and undergraduate students with strong quantitative backgrounds in machine learning or statistical modeling, experience programming in Python or MATLAB, and a broad interest in biomedical/clinical science are encouraged to apply. The projects can be tailored to meet educational credit requirements if applicable. Interested students should contact Dr. Ukita directly via email.
