Shanice Martin, M.A.

Doctoral Intern
Pronouns: she/her/hers

My aim is to provide students with culturally sensitive tools and a safe space to navigate the challenges that come with life and personal growth. I believe in honoring salient identities and experiences throughout the therapeutic process, understanding that change is not a linear path but a complex journey requiring patience and perseverance.

Shanice Martin, a New York native, is a doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology Psy.D. program at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA, currently completing her internship at Vanderbilt’s University Counseling Center. Her educational journey includes a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University at Albany (SUNY) and a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Bowie State University in Maryland, where she holds a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) license. She has clinical experience working with adolescents, young adults, and older adults in college counseling centers, community mental health, dual diagnosis treatment, and a hospital specializing in cancer/oncology.

In the therapy room, Shanice employs a strength-based and collaborative approach, incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Adlerian therapy, and mindfulness techniques to address her clients’ unique needs. Her areas of clinical interest and specialization include depression, anxiety, trauma, life transition and adjustment concerns, first-generation student issues, academic and performance-related concerns, and identity exploration. Drawing from her own experiences as a Jamaican-American, she is particularly passionate about working with issues related to the Black diaspora, racial and ethnic minority concerns, immigrant and international student experiences, intercultural matters, and faith/spirituality. Shanice is excited to work with Vanderbilt students this year, supporting their mental and academic needs.

Shanice’s self-care consists of long walks, yoga, traveling, reading, baking, and spending time with her people.
