Procedures and Penalties for Parking Violations

Pay a fine

Traffic fines may be appealed or paid online or can be paid at the Office of Parking Services within fifteen days of the citation. (See Appeals below.)

Students: Fines will be charged to the student's account if not appealed or paid within fifteen days (if identified).

Faculty and Staff: Should pay fines when received to avoid further action. Subsequent vehicle registration will be withheld until all citations have been paid.

Notes:

  1. Vehicles with multiple citations will be towed for identification and payment of citations.
  2. Delayed Registration and Fines: Fines for citations on unregistered vehicles that are subsequently identified or registered by students are automatically billed to students' accounts. Faculty and staff member should pay citations when received to avoid further actions.

To pay a fine in person, please come by our office at 111 28th AV S, Nashville, TN 37212 during our office hours Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.


Appeal a Citation

Traffic citations issued by the Office of Parking Services may be appealed online within 15 days to the Parking Services Appeals Committee. Please note that "All decisions of the Parking Citations Appeals Committee are Final."

NOTE : Fines for citations by students are automatically billed to Student Accounts if not appealed within 15 days.

Common Violations and Fines

  • $25

    Permit does not match vehicle description and/or license plate currently registered

  • $30

    Improper parking, for example, parking outside of lines

  • $60

    Parked in an area reserved for others

  • $75

    Parking on lawns, curbs, or walkways, No valid permit, Blocking drive, walkway, dumpster

  • $100

    Parking in a reserved space or lot

  • $175

    Unauthorized parking in a disabled parking space or blocking access to a ramp

  • $250

    Altering, lost/stolen,or transfered permit (also subject to disciplinary action and loss of parking privileges)

Special Situations

In the event of vehicle mechanical failure, the operator must notify the Office of Parking Services and after normal business hours, contact the Vanderbilt University Police Department. Under no circumstances may the vehicle block traffic, cause a safety hazard, be parked in a reserved space, a ADA Handicap space, or a fire lane. Vehicles may be relocated if necessary.

Citation FAQs

  • When are citations written?

    Regulations are enforced 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. A citation may be written at any time.

  • How do I appeal a citation?

    Appeals can be submitted online through the parking website, within 15 calendar days from the date the citation was issued

  • How long do I have to pay?

    Citations must be paid (if not appealed) within 15 calendar days from the date the citation is issued.

  • What will happen if I do not pay my citation

    If you are a student and do not pay or appeal your citation within 15 calendar days, the fee amount will be sent to your student account. If you are faculty or staff you may be subject to collections. If you have three or more unpaid citations your vehicle is subject to towing.

  • What happens if my car is towed?

    When your car is towed, it will be taken to the tow lot on campus until all citations are paid. An additional $125 tow fee will be added to your total fee. The individual picking up the vehicle will be responsible for the tow fee.

  • What causes my vehicle to be towed?

    Three unpaid citations will result in towing. Also, violations such as parking in a service area, fire lane, a reserved space, a disability space (without a valid disability placard) or if you obstruct traffic and create a safety hazard can result in towing.

  • If I receive a parking citation, can I let my parents, spouse, or friends communicate on my behalf with Parking & Transportation Services and University Officials?

    Please be advised that pursuant to confidentiality laws, Parking & Transportation Services and other University officials can only communicate with the student who has been issued the citation.
