John Grimes
PhD, MD
John “Nicky” Grimes is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Medical Innovators Development Program (MIDP), a PhD-to-MD training program and is currently a diagnostic radiology resident at Stanford. Prior to MIDP, he served at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Senior Lead Reviewer and Biomedical Engineer for neurological and neurosurgical devices and worked on the full array of Pre-Market device submissions (Pre-Submissions, 513(g)s, Investigational Device Exemptions (IDEs), Humanitarian Device Exemptions (HDEs), 510(k)s, de novos, PreMarket Approvals (PMAs)); and Digital Health Policy Analyst (including medical device software, mobile medical apps, the FDA PreCertification program).
He obtained his undergraduate degree in computer engineering, with a minor in business administration, a Masters of Engineering in biomedical engineering, and a PhD in biomedical engineering, all from the University of Florida. His PhD research focused on neural engineering and used an animal model of epilepsy to investigate seizure propagation. His prior work experience includes the U.S. Department of Defense (electrical engineering and computer science), Chief Technology Officer of the MammaCare Foundation (breast health education technology and web development), and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (intellectual property and biomedical imaging devices).
