Farmers-Market-2012-LO48-585x298The Nashville Farmers’ Market at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) returns Thursday, June 9, and will be held every Thursday from 2-5 p.m. through Oct. 27.

After a one-year temporary move to a site on Medical Center Drive due to construction, the market returns to its traditional home on the Medical Center plaza. Vendors will be located a little further north, to the area of the plaza adjacent to the Eskind Biomedical Library, said Melinda Mahoney, health educator for Health Plus, the Vanderbilt staff and faculty wellness program that co-sponsors the VUMC market.

“We are thrilled to be back at the plaza since it is such a convenient place on campus to offer farm fresh foods to our community,” Mahoney said.

This year’s operating hours represent a shift to an earlier time.

“The last hour of the market from 5 to 6 p.m. was typically low-traffic, and we received feedback from faculty and staff supporting an earlier start time,” Mahoney said.

In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, the market also offers fresh flowers, meat, cheese, milk and bread.

Mahoney, who is a registered dietitian, noted that Health Plus also offers nutrition education and skill building to help faculty and staff build a foundation for healthy eating, and that the market is a natural extension of that emphasis.

“Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is an important part of good nutrition, and the Vanderbilt Farmers’ Market offers a convenient option for faculty and staff to get fresh local produce,” she said.
