Vanderbilt University students will celebrate Climate & Energy Week Nov. 8-11 with a variety of activities open to the Vanderbilt community.
The Vanderbilt Institute for Energy and Environment (VIEE) and the German Embassy are sponsoring Climate & Energy Week , a student-led effort to promote solutions to our energy and climate change needs.
Activities include:
A group of Vanderbilt students will take a field trip to Glencliff High School on Nov. 10 to help in the creation of a homegrown, sustainable, vegetable and produce garden. Students from Vanderbilt will assist in creating a compost area and raised beds for vegetable planting.
Political consultant Thad Huguley will make a presentation at the Law School on Thursday, Nov.11, at 12:30 p.m. in Moore Room. His talk, which is free and open to the Vanderbilt community is titled, “Post-Election Prospects for Climate and Energy Legislation.”
The newly-created Energy Alternatives Club will provide hands-on-training to Vanderbilt students in the production of biodiesel. Biodiesel is being produced in a lab on campus and is used in campus vehicles and machinery. The training/education will take place at 4 p.m. on Nov. 11, in the General Chemistry lab on the second floor of Stevenson Center, building 5.
The Climate Connections Carnival will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., at The Commons Center. This information fair will feature live music and interactive displays from student environmental organization. Attendees will be asked to take the “28-Day Challenge,” a commitment for students to make a habit change that would reduce their overall carbon foot print.
The culminating Green Unity Gala will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Buttrick Hall atrium. Speakers will include a representative from the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., and representatives from The Climate Project, a Nashville-based effort dedicated to educating the public about climate change.
The German Embassy is supporting energy and climate change related activities at Vanderbilt (and 20 other campuses across the United States) as part of the Transatlantic Climate Bridge, a project designed to facilitate the exchange of expertise between Germany and the USA and pave the way for joint solutions to our energy and climate change needs.
The goals of the Energy & Climate Change week are to: (1) increase student involvement in and awareness of climate change issues, and (2) build a closer relationship with the city of Nashville, demonstrating how Vanderbilt students can help meet the needs of citywide climate change and energy goals.
