Engineering Professor Hiba Baroud selected for Global Young Academy
Hiba Baroud, A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation Faculty Fellow and associate chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been selected for membership in the Global Young Academy. She joins the world’s top 200 young researchers and professionals to contribute innovative and creative solutions that address critical global challenges.
The GYA’s new member cohort of 41 includes representatives from 31 individual countries, covering all GYA general disciplines, and includes 16 women, 1 non-binary and 24 men.
Baroud was selected for her pioneering research in understanding the resilience of infrastructure to climate-driven disasters and the tools and methods she has developed to support decision makers in communities who rely on this infrastructure. She has exercised her methods in communities round the world, including in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Jordan and Guatemala.

Baroud received at NSF Faculty Early CAREER Development grant in 2020. She was the recipient of the inaugural Littlejohn Dean’s Faculty Fellowship, and endowed fellowship for junior faculty members, and was in the first cohort of the Chancellor’s Global Voices Fellowship, a semester-long program designed to expand Vanderbilt’s global reach by amplifying the impact of faculty academic research. She joined the Vanderbilt School of Engineering in 2015.
The GYA, based in Germany, links young scientists from more than 90 countries and provides members with the opportunity to develop their leadership by addressing interdisciplinary public policy issues related to the role of scientific research and the improvement of its influence in international development. Membership is limited to 200 members who serve five-year terms. Each year up to 40 early career scientists are selected—typically only one to three from the United States. Baroud will begin her term in June.
