Walker named recycling coordinator, spearheads recycling effort at Move In

Lindsay Walker was named campus recycling coordinator July 1, in time to spearhead recycling efforts at first-year student Move In in August.
At this year’s Move In, Vanderbilt recycled 34 percent more cardboard than last year – almost 18 tons in one day. This effort was accomplished in collaboration with Students Promoting Environmental Awareness and Responsibility and the Plant Operations grounds crew. Additionally, two 26-foot trucks full of Styrofoam and plastic film were diverted from the trash for recycling.
“It’s great to see an improvement of more than 4.6 tons from last year at Move In,” Walker said. “SPEAR and the grounds crew worked really hard to help make this happen.”
As campus recycling coordinator, Walker’s duties include managing the recycling programs that serve classrooms, offices, student centers and research buildings on campus as well as the residential student recycling program; athletics recycling at football, basketball and baseball events; and coordinating recycling for large events such as Earth Friendly Move In, Move Out and Commencement.
Walker received a B.S. degree in environmental studies from Belmont University, where she served as vice president of Belmont’s environmental club. Her past experience includes teaching recycling to elementary students with Metro Nashville’s Beautification and Environment Commission and interning as a seasonal naturalist at Shelby Bottom’s Nature Center.
