OACS Partners with Medicine, Health and Society to create MHS 3890 – Local Perspectives on Wellness in Refugee and Immigrant Communities

Posted by on Thursday, January 14, 2016 in archives.

In partnership with Medicine, Health and Society, Dr. JuLeigh Petty, Dr. Clive Mentzel, and Erika Larson have co-designed and will co-teach a service immersion course where 12 students will learn from academic experts on campus and local community leaders engaged in the community about the lived experience of refugees and immigrants in Nashville. Besides spending time in the classroom for the academic component, students will be serving with six local nonprofits for six hours per week. By the end of the course students will have developed relationships with the refugee and immigrant community and gain a comprehensive understanding of the existing support structures as well as knowledge of the gaps in services to our new neighbors.
