Ally Appreciation Week Feb 18-22

Vanderbilt’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI) Life office was created five years ago in order to better support LGBTQI students, faculty, and staff, and raise a dialogue within the larger Vanderbilt community about sexual orientation and gender issues.

This year, in addition to our regular slate of programs and services (outlined on our website), we have planned a week to appreciate those on campus who have served as allies to the LGBTQI community – in big and small ways.  It takes a lot of work to make our community – any community, really – safe and welcoming to individuals of all identities, and we want to go out of our way to thank those who have shared in our work.

Moreover, LGBTQI Life is thrilled to be hosting Ally Appreciation Week at Vanderbilt February 18-22nd.  And, as a centerpiece to this initiative, we are very excited to host a talk by Zach Wahls on Feb. 20th at 7pm in Sarratt Cinema.

More about Zack: When Zach Wahls testified before the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in January 2011, he did not expect his speech to receive over 17 million hits on YouTube. He didn’t expect to become a social media sensation. He was simply stepping up and speaking out for his family and what he knew was right. You can view Zach’s speech by following this link: Zach Wahls Speech.

We hope you will be able to attend this very powerful event about acceptance and family. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and for all you do to make students’ lives better at Vanderbilt.
