Charles Lowman is joining us as the new Associate Director for Residential Education. Below is a note from Charles. Please take the time to introduce yourself if you see him around campus.

Greetings, colleagues!

My name is Charles A. Lowman and I will be serving as the new Associate Director for Residential Education. I will oversee Blakemore, Branscomb, Carmichael Towers, and the new Kissam College Halls. Additionally, I have been tasked with the recruitment, selection, and training of our Resident Adviser and Head Resident staff. I am very excited to join the Vanderbilt family and return to the SEC!

Prior to Vanderbilt, I worked as an Assistant Director for Residential Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA working primarily with the First Year Experience and living-learning communities. I spent the majority of my career at the University of South Carolina working with the Green Quad living-learning community. That position afforded me the tremendous opportunity to work with a Faculty Head to help students explore the changes necessary to create a truly sustainable world. It was one of the most fulfilling and exciting positions I have ever held.

I received my bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies (with a minor in French) in 2003 from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and my master’s degree in 2005 from the University of South Carolina in Higher Education Administration. I hope to complete my doctorate in the near future.

Miscellaneous trivia about me:

* I love to cook (and I’m pretty good at it, if I say so myself).

* I grew up on a small organic farm in western NC.

* I appreciate good, clean, corny jokes.

* My favorite TV show at the moment is “The Walking Dead.” I also love anything news-related.

* I enjoy trying unique, local restaurants. If you have any suggestions of where I should try next, please send them my way.

If I have not met you yet, I look forward to doing so. I wish everyone a wonderful Spring semester!
