Transfer and Exchange Student Housing

Transfer Housing General Information

Vanderbilt University’s continued commitment to undergraduate housing, as highlighted in the University announcement of the development of the Central Neighborhood), brings numerous changes for the 2025-26 transfer housing assignment process.  Historically, all transfer students have been required to live on campus, however given our reduced capacity, we will be offering transfer students the opportunity to reside off campus for the 2025-26 academic year.  Our on-campus housing is limited. All housing preferences (on-campus or off-campus) will be allocated to incoming transfer students on a first-come, first-served basis determined by the date their matriculation deposit is processed, contingent upon submitting a housing application within three weeks of their admission to Vanderbilt. To support those who do not receive an on-campus assignment, the University has partnered with The Broadview at Vanderbilt, our first public-private partnership, to ensure incoming transfer students have an available affiliated off-campus housing option close to campus. Questions regarding how on- or off-campus housing will impact a student’s financial aid or scholarship package should be directed to Financial Aid.

All transfer students who accept their offer of admission are required to submit a housing application via the Housing Portal, where they will have the opportunity to rank their housing preferences (on-campus housing, university affiliated off-campus housing, or independent off-campus housing). Housing applications are due 10 days after your matriculation deposit deadline. Students will be notified of their housing type (on-campus or off-campus housing) within 10 days of their housing application deadline. While we are unable to guarantee first-choice preferences due to limited space, transfer students will have meaningful opportunities to connect and engage with the Vanderbilt University community, no matter where they live.

On-Campus Housing Options

On-campus housing is limited for incoming transfer students and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Options will include traditional double rooms (Blakemore, McGill, and Tolman) or vacancies in suites/apartments (Chaffin, Lewis, Mayfield, Morgan, and Village at Vanderbilt) shared with continuing upper-division students, including resident advisors (RAs).  Opportunities to reside in single rooms or in the residential colleges will likely be unavailable. While we are unable to guarantee specific building or roommate preferences due to limited space, our priority is creating meaningful connections with current and incoming students as transfer students join the Vanderbilt community.

If offered the opportunity to reside in on-campus housing, students will receive their assignment on or around August 8, 2025. Students can submit room change requests beginning the first day of classes. Additional information regarding room changes will be available in mid-August on the Housing website. Please note that once a student is offered the opportunity to reside on campus, they will not be eligible to request off-campus authorization for the 2025-26 academic year.

Off-Campus Housing Options

Once a student is granted off-campus housing authorization, they will not be eligible to opt into on-campus housing for the fall 2025 semester. We anticipate having more opportunities for students to reside on campus for the spring 2026 semester, if interest remains. Students who are approved to reside off campus for the 2025-26 academic year will receive communication regarding the required reporting of their off-campus address and phone number in early August.

University Affiliated Off-Campus Housing (The Broadview)

Vanderbilt has partnered with The Broadview at Vanderbilt to ensure available units for incoming transfer students. The Broadview is adjacent to campus and offers apartment-style living with amenities designed for students. Each home is fully furnished with bedroom furniture, a full kitchen, appliances, and washer/dryer. The complex also features a public courtyard, fitness center and 6,500 square feet of collaboration and study workspaces. The Broadview will offer transfer students the opportunity to sign 9-month leases at rates comparable to the on-campus housing rate. Residential Colleges will host programs in the Broadview workspaces, offering transfer students living in The Broadview an opportunity to connect with each other and fostering a strong link between The Broadview and campus. Questions about The Broadview can be directed to Brooke McLamb, Broadview Transfer Coordinator (BroadviewTransferStudents@bbcgrp.com).

Independent Off-Campus Housing

Students are welcome to utilize the Off-Campus Housing Service to explore available listings in the area. Transfer students currently receiving aid who have questions about how residing off campus will impact their aid are encouraged to reach out to their Financial Aid Officer.

Student Renter’s Insurance Requirement

As noted in the Housing Contract, the University is not liable for damage to property or injuries arising out of a resident’s occupancy of their assigned rooms, except if such damage or injury results from negligent acts or omissions by the University.

As a resident, you are liable to the University and others for loss or damage caused by your actions or those of your guests. You are required to maintain adequate property and liability insurance that includes the following:

  • Personal Property Insurance: covering the student’s belongings while on campus, with a limit adequate to repair or replace the student’s personal property in the event of loss, damage, or theft.
  • Personal Liability Insurance: with a limit no less than $100,000 and include coverage for student caused water damage or fire damage to adjacent spaces.

These insurance requirements are minimum requirements only. The university does not warrant or represent that this coverage will be adequate or sufficient to protect you or your guests from liability. We recommend that you discuss your specific insurance needs with an authorized insurance agent. Required insurance may be provided by a standalone Renter’s Insurance Policy or by endorsement or extension from a Homeowners Insurance Policy maintained by you or by a Parent/Guardian/Family Member.

Securing renters insurance is important whether you reside on- or off-campus.

Fully compliant renters’ insurance may be obtained from:
