About the Campus

Vanderbilt University–New York City is on a beautiful, historic campus in the Chelsea neighborhood that was built in 1817 as an Episcopal seminary (440 W. 21st St., NYC). Vanderbilt began operations on this campus in 2025 and continues this site’s history as a place for living, learning and connecting in the heart of Manhattan.

  • What is Vanderbilt University–New York City?

    Vanderbilt University–New York City is a Vanderbilt campus in the heart of New York City that was established to expand Vanderbilt's educational, research and community engagement in one of the world's most vibrant cities. The campus offers undergraduate semester programs for students in the College of Arts & Science, School of Engineering, Peabody College, and Blair School of Music and a one-year Master’s of Science in Business and Technology program, linking students to New York’s diverse industries. In addition to academic programming, the campus hosts a range of alumni and community events, executive education workshops and university initiatives.

  • Why did Vanderbilt choose NYC?

    The economic, cultural, political and innovative importance of the NYC region, and the potential opportunities there for students and faculty, cannot be overstated. In addition to being a talent magnet and boasting a diverse and highly educated workforce, the region is home to the largest Vanderbilt community outside of Tennessee. There are more than 7,800 alumni in New York City today and 740 New Yorkers enrolled at Vanderbilt. The city's rich resources will facilitate hands-on learning, professional development and deep immersion in fields and industries that are centered there.

    Chelsea is a historic and creative neighborhood on Manhattan’s West Side that is known for its cultural institutions, galleries and thriving arts scene. The area’s rich resources align perfectly with Vanderbilt’s mission of providing exceptional academic experiences, and the campus itself offers a peaceful oasis in the middle of the bustling city.

  • When will the campus open?

    We announced our exploration of launching a NYC campus in September 2024. In early 2025, we began hosting alumni gatherings and public speaker events on the NYC campus. Our proposed academic programming was approved by New York state regulators in November 2025, and the Master of Science in Business and Technology program is pending final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. We are actively recruiting the first cohort of students to arrive on campus in fall 2026. While we prepare to begin academic programming, we will continue managing facility improvements and activating the campus with community engagement initiatives.

  • Who is leading the planning?

    The planning for the Vanderbilt University–New York City campus is led by a dedicated team, including faculty, administrators and a faculty advisory committee that provides input on academic programming, community relations and partnerships in the region.

    In March 2025, James Kellerhouse was named Vanderbilt's assistant vice chancellor for strategic initiatives in New York City. Reporting to Darren Reisberg, Vanderbilt's vice chancellor for administration, James is leading on-campus operations for the NYC campus.

    In September 2025, Kevin Stack was named senior associate provost for Vanderbilt’s campus in New York City. Reporting to Tiffiny Tung, Vanderbilt’s vice provost for undergraduate education, Kevin oversees academic affairs for the NYC campus.

  • What academic programs will be offered?

    Vanderbilt’s NYC campus will offer a residential undergraduate semester program for upper-division students and, pending additional approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, a one-year Master’s of Science in Business and Technology. These programs are designed to leverage the city as a classroom by pairing academic coursework with internships, experiential learning and industry connections.

  • How will students benefit from being in NYC?

    New York is a global talent magnet and center for diverse industries from finance and media to technology and the arts. Students interested in careers in these varied industries will have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning opportunities through internships, capstone projects and collaboration with industry professionals while studying in NYC. The vibrant city life also provides access to world-class cultural experiences, networking opportunities and a supportive alumni network.

  • What safety measures are in place for students on campus?

    Undergraduate students will enjoy the community and support of residential life on Vanderbilt’s NYC campus. The campus will have two Housing and Student Support staff members who live on-site at Vanderbilt University–New York City and assist with housing concerns, programming, crisis response, student follow-up and referrals to other student support services. The campus will also feature 24/7 coverage by public safety officers assigned to the front gate and foot patrol of the campus.

    Directions

    By Subway:

    • Vanderbilt's NYC campus is conveniently near several major subway lines that provide easy access from points throughout the city. Here are the closest subway stations:
    • 23rd Street Station (C, E lines): Just a five-minute walk from campus. Exit the station and head south on Eighth Avenue, then turn right on West 21st Street.
    • 18th Street Station (1 line): A 10-minute walk. Exit the station, head north on Seventh Avenue, and make a left on West 21st Street.
    • 14th Street Station (A, C, E, L lines): About a 12-minute walk. Walk north on Eighth Avenue, then right onto West 21st Street.

    By Bus:

    • Local bus services provide another excellent option for reaching campus.
    • M20 Bus: Exit at Eighth Avenue/West 21st Street.
    • M23 SBS Bus: Exit at West 23rd Street/Ninth Avenue and walk south to West 21st Street.
