Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee

CHARGE

A Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) serves as a community voice for active transportation users. The Vanderbilt University BPAC provides feedback on ongoing bicycle and pedestrian projects, proposed policy changes, and new programs. The committee provide recommendations to improve these initiatives and call attention to unforeseen transportation challenges impacting campus projects, allowing these challenges to be addressed thoughtfully before implementation.

The BPAC strengthens the voice of active transportation users on campus, highlights overlooked walking and bicycling perspectives, functions as channel for community feedback, and institutionalizes bicyclist and pedestrian consideration in decision making. The BPAC implements the FutureVU guiding principle of making campus more walkable, bikeable, and sustainable and supports MoveVU goals of increasing the percentage of commuters walking and biking to campus. Additionally, it enhances Vanderbilt’s reputation in Nashville and Middle Tennessee as a leader in mobility and sustainability and improves our Bicycle Friendly University rating.

Responsibilities

• Community Feedback – The BPAC serves as a sounding board for proposed projects, programs, and policies. The committee is well-suited to provide consolidated community feedback on external projects, such as those by NDOT, TDOT, and WeGo.
• Needs Identification – The BPAC identifies deficiencies in existing infrastructure, as well as broader access issues, commute challenges, and facility-related needs. The committee also highlights unanticipated negative impacts of legacy policies or processes. By identifying needs and sharing perspectives on potential solutions, the BPAC allows the University to effectively address active transportation challenges.
• Project Prioritization – The BPAC provides a voice clarifying the priorities of campus active transportation users. As MoveVU and FutureVU strategies are implemented, the BPAC prioritizes the menu of available strategies into an annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Work Program.
• Information Sharing and Engagement in Initiatives – The BPAC serves as a centralized means of distributing information to a wider audience because of its diverse representation. Additionally, members are well-situated to take on active roles as “champions” for initiatives, bolstering the impact of MoveVU programs.
