Community

LGBTQI Life’s Engage: Community is a list of volunteer opportunities at many LGBTQI organizations in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee areas. Our goal is to assist students in connecting with these opportunities, and this list is updated regularly with the goal of capturing as many volunteer opportunities as possible to promote our students’™ involvement with the greater Nashville and Middle Tennessee LGBTQI community.

To submit a volunteer opportunity to the Community, please contact Program Coordinator Liv Parks (they/them) at liv.parks@vanderbilt.edu.

Organization Name: Nashville PRIDE
Organization Website: https://nashvillepride.org/
Date/s Volunteers are needed: Our volunteer commitment varies depending on the time of the year. We have individual volunteers that sign up for every event and we have volunteers that might sign up for one or 2 events for the whole year, as available. We welcome all volunteers, no matter how little or how much they can volunteer. While our biggest need is in the summer with the annual PRIDE Fest, we have events throughout the year such as dinners, social events, etc that raise awareness and capital for our organization. We need volunteers at these events, as well.
Time/s Volunteers are needed: On going
Type of Work needed: During the events scattered throughout the year, volunteers might find themselves greeting patrons, setting up and tearing down venue space, running food or drinks to patrons, passing out promotional items, etc. The volunteer structure for the PRIDE Fest is a bit different and tends to follow more of a structure. We have volunteer’s duties and shifts assigned to volunteers and scheduled according to their individual commitments.

Special instructions: We get volunteers with all kinds of different skill sets. The skill set we need, though, is the right attitude and the willingness to work hard, make people feel welcome and comfortable, and advance the cause for equality.

Organization Name: Out Central
Organization Website: https://outcentral.org/
Date/s Volunteers are needed: On going
Time/s Volunteers are needed:
We prefer our volunteers to be available for at least one 3- to 4-hour shift per week (for regular hours), and we also need people to help out with annual special events such as the Gay5K and Autumn Honors.
Type of Work needed: Primarily answering the telephone and dealing with walk-in visitors if working the front desk. That job includes monitoring our inquiry email account and fielding those requests, and/or getting the proper board member to respond. Volunteers also will be pulling messages from voicemail, and hopefully transcribing those into an email to the appropriate board member to handle.
Location: 1709 Church Street, Nashville TN
Special instructions: An ability to deal with inquiries on several different fronts would be helpful. For example, office and space rental, programming inquiries (both what we offer, and from people who want to offer programming via Out Central, tenant issues (cleaning, trash removal, etc.) all come in pretty steadily, and so a volunteer should be able to distill that information into a digestible format and get it to the proper person.
