With the rising prevalence of crime and violence in Central America, USAID has implemented interventions in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama to reduce crime and increase security through community programming and making opportunities for at-risk youth.
LAPOP’s purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs. LAPOP’s design combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including conducting more than 29,000 interviews over a number of decades. Findings indicate that these community-based crime programs have positive effects on a multitude of indicators. Encouraging community and civil service participation in prevention of crime can increase security.
