Vanderbilt Institute for Digital Learning (VIDL) to host VIDL studio open house
The Vanderbilt Institute for Digital Learning (VIDL) is holding an open house for the VIDL Studio at Warren College on Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend.
The VIDL studio opened in January 2016 to all Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center faculty, staff, and students. To date, the VIDL studio has more than 150 members (i.e., anyone who has completed the training to use the studio) across the Vanderbilt community.
The studio is based on a self-serve model, where members with basic computer skills can use the studio to produce a high quality, finished video ready for distribution.
Jeff Shoup, the studio manager notes, “The idea originated from the concept of students as producers. Video is increasingly an essential form of communication. Faculty may want to produce content for their on-campus courses and beyond. Many students and staff groups have been able to make use of the studio. The studio incorporates the use of a computer control app. We have been able to create custom controls that are easy to use without prior knowledge about cameras, lighting or audio.”
During the Feb. 15th open house, VIDL plans to demonstrate the newest features of the studio, including the lightboard and live streaming functions. Karisa Calvitti, production assistant explains, ” The lightboard tool is great for those who use a whiteboard or a chalkboard in their presentations. It allows users to write as they would on a white or chalk board.” With the addition of live streaming, “Members will be able to stream any number of services, including YouTube, and Facebook, interact with their audience, and record the entire session to be distributed like any other video created in the studio.”
The ongoing innovations to studio technology are part of a larger effort to support the educational technology pillar of the 2014 Academic Strategic Plan. To find out more about the open house or to become a member visit Vanderbilt.edu/vidlstudio.
