3 New Big Trips for Spring 2012
MAR 3 – 11, 2012 (Sat. - Sun.)
CANOE-CAMPING @ Buffalo National River, AR
Cost: $370 Pre-Trip Meeting: Wed. Jan. 18 at 5:30 pm Sign-up by: Fri. Jan. 27th
The Buffalo National River of northwest Arkansas is one of America-s finest free flowing rivers. This entire trip will be in the national park; the Buffalo was the first river named as a national river in the United States. We plan on paddling 62.8 miles in 7 days on this beautiful river. The first day will have some whitewater rapids, but the rest of the trip will be a moderate to easy Class 1 float. Massive limestone bluffs, waterfalls, and side hikes will add to the fun of this trip. We will camp every night on the river in either a developed campsite or along a more remote gravel bar. We will have one day of rest, where we will not pack up and paddle. We will be primarily paddling canoes, 2 people plus gear per boat. We will also have 2-3 long kayaks on the trip to give everyone the chance to paddle a kayak. Previous paddling experience is helpful, but not required. Participants must know how to swim. We will stay in a cheap hotel on the last night of the trip, in Conway, Arkansas. Participants are expected to attend two more Pre-Trip Meetings in 2012. Estimated trip duration: 7:00 AM Sat. to 4 PM Sun. For more info, please check our web at www.vanderbilt.edu/outrec. Cost includes van transportation, on-the-river food, hotel at the end of the trip, group camping equipment, river bags, paddling jackets, canoes, kayaks, and paddling gear. Space is limited to the first 12 people that sign up, so don-t delay.

BACKPACKING, HIKING, & CAMPING @ Capitol Reef National Park and Arches National Park, Utah
Cost: $1,180 to fly from Nashville or $580 to meet us at the Salt Lake City Airport
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thu Mar 22 @ 5:30 pm Sign up by: Fri Jan. 27
Southern Utah is a photographer-s paradise! On this trip we will see colorful cliffs, canyons, domes, arches, knobs, boulders, the Waterpocket Fold, scenic overlooks, and rocks of all shapes and sizes! Due to the large variety of items to see and a shortage of water in a desert environment, this trip will have only one overnight backpacking trip, with two long day hikes, and three days with part driving and part exploring. We will spend 3.5 days in Capitol Reef National Park, including a 14.5 mile backpacking trip in and above the beautiful Upper Muley Twist Canyon. We will also explore the incredible Spring Canyon on 9.7 mile hike. We will spend close to 2.5 days in Arches National Park, hiking 7.7 miles in the Devil-s Garden and checking out other arches, including the famous Delicate Arch. All the hiking is easy to moderate in difficulty, so beginner backpackers are welcome. Space is limited to the first 6 people who sign up. More information can be found at www.vanderbilt.edu/outrec. Cost includes: Air fare (Nashville to Salt Lake City), van transportation, group equipment, in-camp food, camping fees, entrance fees, and a night in a cheap hotel on Sat. 5/26.

In addition to being centrally located to world class boulders, this trip will spend some time exploring the cliffs of the Owens River Gorge. This gorge is one of the highest concentrations of quality sport climbing in the great state of California. While the walls offer a wealth of easier climbs, there is a huge variety of 5.10 to 5.11 climbing to be had. Prior climbing experience is required, and this trip is limited to 6 PARTICIPANTS, SO DON-T DELAY SIGNING UP. More information can be found at www.vanderbilt.edu/outrec.
