WHITEWATER RAFTING & CAMPING @ Ocoee River, TN

Whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River is packed with fun and excitement on back-to-back rapids!   After camping out on Friday, we will be guided down the mighty Middle Ocoee in rafts of 5-6 paddlers each.   No experience is necessary.   We-€™ll eat lunch and have a chance to shower before heading back.   Tip for your guide is included.   Estimated trip duration:   6 pm Fri. -€“ 7 pm Sat.

TRAIL BUILDING @ Bells Bend Park, Nashville, TN

Bells Bend Park is a relatively new park in Nashville that is being developed as a more natural park, rather than a -€œball field park-€. This time we will help build a new mountain biking trail in the park.   Experienced trail volunteers and equipment will be provided to help us.   Lunch is also provided, and hiking afterward is an option.   Estimated trip duration:   8 am -€“ 3 pm.

WHITEWATER CANOEING @ Hiwassee River, TN
Cost: $60   /   Sign-up by:   Fri, Sept. 13   /   Pre-Trip Meeting:   Tue, Sept 17 at 5 pm
Beat the heat by joining the Outdoor Rec. team for a day of exciting rapid running on the Hiwassee, a state scenic river. The 5.5 mile stretch of the Hiwassee is a fantastic introduction to WW Canoeing and offers a number of Class I -€“ II+ rapids to test your paddling prowess.   Participants must be able to swim and canoeing experience is not required. Estimated trip duration:   6 am -€“ 10 pm.

SEPT. 22   (Sun)
CANOEING @ Duck River, TN
Cost: $33   /   Sign-up by:   Fri, Sept. 13   /   Pre-Trip Meeting:   Wed, Sept 18 at 6 pm
The Duck River is a nice river with wooded banks and large, beautiful rock bluffs.     We will paddle a 7.6 mile stretch of the river, from Cortner Mill to the Hwy 41 bridge, just east of Shelbyville.   The mill provides a great place for swimming and playing in the water before we even start canoeing.   Beginners are welcome on this Class I river.   We may see . . . ducks!     Estimated trip duration:   7 am -€“ 6 pm.

TRAIL MAINTENANCE & CLIMBING @ Kings Bluff, TN

Come join Vanderbilt Outdoor Rec and the Southeastern Climbers Coalition for a day of trail maintenance. We will travel to Clarksville to work on Middle Tennessee-€™s best rock climbing resource. Our goal is to repair sections of trail that have seen heavy use and help other sections that are eroding quickly. Expect to get dirty and have fun.   Time and weather permitting, we will climb a couple routes at the end of the day.   (Note:   This trip is during the VU Family Weekend.)   Estimated trip duration:   9 am -€“ 6 pm.

SEPT. 29   (Sunday)
RIVER CLEAN-UP: via CANOEING @ Harpeth River, TN

We have cleaned this river before, so maybe it will show!   This will be a 5-mile canoe trip, except the emphasis will be on picking up the trash from the Harpeth River.   Equipment, transportation, clean-up supplies, and lunch are provided.   Beginners are welcome.     (Note:   This trip is during the VU Family Weekend.)   Estimated trip duration:   8 am -€“ 5 pm.

DEC. 15 – 21, 2013     (Sun. -€“ Sat.)
DOWNHILL SKIING &/or SNOWBOARDING @ Steamboat Springs, CO
Cost: $1,235 (or meet us . . . . !)   //   Sign-up by:   Fri, Oct 4 **       //   Pre-Trip Meeting:   Wed, Oct. 30 at 5 pm
Join us for our 18th annual semester break ski/snowboard trip!   The price includes air (RT: Nashville to Denver) and   bus transportation to our condo, 6 nights lodging, and a 4 of 5 day lift ticket to Steamboat Springs, Ski Town USA, with 165 named trails and 16 lifts. The base elevation is 6,900 feet, with 9,080 feet at mid mountain and 10,568-€™ on top of Mt. Werner. A shuttle runs from our condo to the resort, but it is also within walking distance. We will be staying in the Lodge Condominiums, located 200 yards from the slopes. These large condos have the usual, plus free wifi and laundry facilities on the premises. There is also an indoor hot tub, two outdoor hot tubs, and an outdoor heated swimming pool. The rate we are paying is for -€œfull occupancy-€, which means two people are assigned per bed. If you want a bed to yourself or if a group wants to secure a unit all to themselves, there will be an additional $300 fee for every spot less than 6. To sign up for a trip, come to the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC), located on 2600 Children’s Way, kind of behind the Student  Rec.
