McTyeire Fireside Chat
-The Transformation of Wonder: Observing and Ordering the Natural World in 17th and 18th-century Europe-
By Hanna Roman, Assistant Professor of French and Italian
The Fireside Chat will explore how European scholars of the 17th and 18th centuries viewed, understood, and categorized the natural world. Through images of museums and natural history collections from the period, as well as through texts about nature, we will discuss and question how people interpreted the world and their place and role within it, focusing especially on how the concept of wonder and amazement before natural objects changed over the course of the Enlightenment.
