Tagging for Immersion Vanderbilt

Faculty can add Immersion Vanderbilt attributes by tagging classes that provide an immersive experience, engage in the creation of a culminating project, or both. Tagging your class facilitates effectiveness by making it easy for students to identify classes which offer an opportunity to complete immersive experiences and culminating projects.

If you're assessing whether your class should be tagged, you can read more about the standards for an immersive experience or culminating project class. Use the link above to submit a form when you are ready to tag your class.

Once tagged the class will appear in YES with the attributes you selected.

FAQ

  • What does it mean to “tag” a class?

Tagging a class means that students can find your class in YES by searching the attributes section for classes that fulfill a component of Immersion Vanderbilt.

  • Do I have to tag my class?

Tagging a class is optional. If you choose not to tag your class, you can still inform students that they may use it toward a component of Immersion Vanderbilt. Students who pass a tagged experiential class will see that experience reflected in their YES record.

Students may complete an unlimited number of immersive experiences before they complete their culminating project.

  • What do I have to do if I tag my class?

The instructor of a tagged class serves as the experience mentor or culminating project adviser. No additional steps are required for those teaching classes tagged as experiential.

Faculty instructors in culminating project classes will grade the student’s work and approve a separate culminating project submission.

  • Do I have to do anything extra if I am the faculty adviser in a tagged culminating class?

You do not have to require additional work of the student nor do you have to provide extra mentorship beyond the class requirements. You will, however, approve the culminating project form for those students who choose to use a culminating project class to satisfy Immersion Vanderbilt.

Enrollment in a culminating project class does not require students to use that project to satisfy Immersion Vanderbilt. They have one year from the completion of the class to make that election.

  • Why should I tag my class?

Tagging your class allows students to more easily identify experiential learning and culminating project options built into the curriculum.

  • Which tag should I choose?

    There are three possible tags:

    • Experiential- classes that provide students with hands-on, active learning opportunities where the student learns through the acts of doing and reflection. Classes that include direct or indirect community or civic engagement or methodological training for research or production are examples.
    • Culminating project- require students to integrate and apply their learning to the creation of a culminating project. Projects may include but are not limited to poster or substantive presentations, academic papers, artistic pieces, prototypes, and podcasts. These are usually advanced-level classes due to the high expectations of students.
    • Experiential or Culminating project with guidance- most applicable to classes with a substantial amount of experiential learning activity resulting in a culminating project.
  • Does every student have to use the tagged class toward Immersion Vanderbilt?

No. Students will automatically receive credit toward Immersion Vanderbilt if they pass a class tagged "experiential." This does not prevent the student from pursuing additional experiences or applying for funding.

  • Do the students have to submit Immersion Vanderbilt forms by a certain date to count the experience or project toward Immersion Vanderbilt?

Students in tagged experiential classes do not have to submit any forms.

Those in culminating classes have one year from the completion of the class if they intend to use it to satisfy Immersion Vanderbilt.

  • May I untag my class?

Yes. To remove your class tag, contact immersion@vanderbilt.edu.

  • Does tagging my class change who can enroll or how I teach it?

No, the tag does not change who is eligible to take the class, how it is assessed, or how it fits within the curriculum of the major, minor, or program.

  • May I tag my section of a course?

Ideally, courses with multiple sections (ie. Senior Honors Thesis or Independent Study) will all have the same tag. It is recommended that the department chair or DUS be involved in determining how best to tag a course.
