Dear Vanderbilt alumni community,

We are writing during this time of great uncertainty to express our concern and support for you and your families. As a member of our alumni community, you are top of mind for us, along with our students, faculty and staff.

We have all been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. You may know that Vanderbilt has moved fully to online and alternative learning for the remainder of the semester and students have been asked to move out of on-campus residences. We have also suspended all university-sponsored events and gatherings through April 30 and instituted an initial remote work period for staff beginning March 16 through March 27. We decided to take these steps based on public health recommendations and best practices and because the health and safety of our community are of the utmost importance.

Additionally, the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust has established an ad hoc committee to support the university’s response to COVID-19. The new Ad Hoc Committee on University COVID-19 Response will serve as an advisory group and resource as ongoing actions are considered in efforts related to educating students using online and alternate methods, continuing research and supporting campus activities disrupted by the global pandemic.

While our campus is the heart of this university, our people are its soul. This challenging situation is necessitating a temporary change to how we deliver education and conduct research and scholarship, but it will not deter us from the pursuit of our mission. During times like these, the Commodore spirit of collaboration and care prevails. We are proud of the ways we have already seen our community come together to support one another.

More than anything, we hope you will reach out to each other. The relationships you formed here are bonds that endure a lifetime. Together we will navigate this difficult time, and we are confident we will emerge a more resilient community.
