For Alumni
Becoming an Advisor
With a Greek community that is over 150 years old, we have over 25,000 living Greek alumni who have graduated from Vanderbilt and gone on to excel in politics, business, education, industry & technology, medicine, law, entertainment and sports. Alumni engagement is absolutely critical to the continued success of the Greek community at Vanderbilt. If you are interested in serving as an advisor on our campus, please contact Kristin Torrey, Director of Greek Life.
Giving to Vanderbilt
Alumni, parents and friends have the opportunity to provide financial support to their fraternity or sorority by giving to Vanderbilt. Tax deductible gifts may be given through Vanderbilt for Greek organizations to support a wide variety of chapter needs including, but not limited to: renovation projects, house improvements and upgrades, educational programming, dues scholarships, conference attendance, retreats and events that meet the chapter needs.
If you are interested in giving a gift to Vanderbilt to benefit your chapter, you can do so by including the chapter name on your check and sending it to:
PMB 407727
2301 Vanderbilt Place
Nashville, TN 37203-9700
You can also give online, by clicking here. Please click “other” in the area you would like to support and include your chapter name in the allocation description area.
For chapters with exclusive use facilities, there are two funds – a general gift fund and a building gift fund. Unless a chapter is in an active capital campaign for their facility, the default for gifts would be to the general gift fund. These gifts can be used for the facility but can also be used for other things. As such, it is recommended that gifts are given to the general fund unless there is an active fund. Donors who are specifically interested in the facility can of course direct their gifts to the building fund.
Most frequently, chapters use funds from the gift funds at their discretion with the approval of their chapter advisor and the Director of Greek Life. Approval from the House Corporation, if one exists would be expected for the expenditure of funds from the building gift fund. The Office of Greek Life staff will engage with chapter advisors and the chapter leaders making requests for spending from the gift fund about their plans for replenishing the account and about being responsible stewards for the gifts that have been contributed.
Should chapters wish to distribute funds to members for dues scholarships or to potential members, checks can be sent to the chapter for crediting the individual members accounts or to the national organization for application fees where applicable. Should a chapter wish to use their gift funds, or any funds held by VU (i.e. Student Service Fee funds) to travel, they must follow the student organization travel policies. Similarly, approved vendors would need to be used or added for spending from any VU held funds.
When a chapter is in an alumni led capital campaign for facility improvements, Vanderbilt will work with the designated alumni representatives on reporting and spending aligned with VU campus planning policies. Current chapter members should be included in the process as appropriate.
If you have questions about the use of gifts, please contact Kristin Torrey, Director of Greek Life.
