Nashville, a city with a vibrant history, is taking a deep dive into its diverse roots through a compelling event series hosted by Vanderbilt University and Nashville Public Library Special Collections. This initiative, titled "Then and Now: The History of Minority Communities in Nashville," delves into the history of various communities that contribute to the rich tapestry of Nashville.
Four thought-provoking panel discussions have already unfolded, each focusing on a distinct community: Black, Latinx/Hispanic, Jewish, and LGBTQI+. These discussions have brought together historians and community partners to explore the unique stories and contributions of these communities to Nashville's growth and evolution.

Why Attend?
"By engaging and welcoming our diverse communities, we will realize our full potential and find the best paths forward for all who live in our beloved city and region," notes series moderator Dr. André L. Churchwell, native Nashvillian and senior advisor to the Vanderbilt University chancellor on inclusion and community outreach. The events aim to explore the history and impact of these communities through the lens of both scholarly work and personal stories.
Dr. Churchwell highlights the power of history and diversity, calling Nashville the "second international city of the South." By attending these events, you not only gain insight into Nashville's past but also contribute to its future as an inclusive and egalitarian city.
