Global Scholars in Residence Program

The Global Engagement Travel Grants program provides financial support to faculty traveling internationally to present at high-impact forums, academic conferences, colloquia, summits, and symposia or participate in professional development and training workshops

  • Eligibility and Requirements
    1. All applications must include a budget. The budget should use Vanderbilt’s per diem ratefor meals. 
    2. All full-time, VU-employed (Provost-reporting) faculty are eligible. 
    3. Faculty may submit one global travel application per year. 
    4. Awards are based partly on need. As a result, each participating faculty member must disclose institutional resources available in the form of start-up funds or other discretionary research and professional development funds. All institutional research-support funds, including endowed chair funds, annual allocations, and other such sources, must be noted. 
    5. Supplemental and/or matching funds from schools and departments are strongly encouraged. 
    6. All funds must be used within the fiscal year in which the funding is awarded (that is, no carry forward). 
    7. In order to receive funds, faculty must include documentation of their participation/acceptance in the application (e.g., link to conference programs or professional development meetings/workshops).
    8. Recipients must provide an update on the status of their research, including a brief statement and any relevant images, by the end of the spring semester. 
  • Guidelines for Review

    Proposals that include the following criteria will be viewed favorably:

    • It shows a need beyond existing internal funding
    • It proposes a conference or workshop that is significant in the applicant's field of study and will pull attendants from numerous global settings
    • It reflects a meaningful investment from the proposers’ research.

    Proposals are reviewed once per semester. Award decisions will be made by the end of the semester in which you apply.

  • Additional Requirements
    • Proposals must include documentation of participation or acceptance
    • Applications must disclose internal funds available to them
    • Proposals must provide a short description of the conference or professional development meeting and its impact in the field

    All proposals must be submitted online using InfoReady Review, Vanderbilt’s online submissions portal, or by clicking the "Apply Now" button on this page.

    Information to include in your proposal:

    • Proposal title
    • Applicant information
    • Financial contact information
    • Name of the conference or event
    • Description of the event and its importance in the field
    • Disclosure of internal funding
    • Description of the scholarly/creative work of the proposed visiting scholar
    • Role of the applicant at this event
    • Willingness to host a Vanderbilt reception
    • Budget Overview 
    • Current CV
    • Documentation of acceptance or participation
  • Funding Guidelines

    The Vice Provost of Global Engagement supports proposals up to $3,000.

    Awarded funds may only be used in the fiscal year for which they are applied.

    TheGlobal Engagement Travel Grantscan be used for: 

    • Travel (airfare, hotels, ground transportation abroad, visas, if required for travel) 
    • Conference or Meeting Registration Fees

    The Global Engagement Travel Grant accepts applications once per semester:

    • Summer-Fall 2024 (July 1 - December): August 19, 2024
    • Spring-Summer 2025 (March-June 30th)December 6, 2024
