Neil Kelley

Assistant Professor, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Dr. Kelley’s research focuses on the evolution and ecology of ancient marine vertebrates, particularly extinct marine reptile groups that thrived as dominant ocean predators during the Mesozoic era. Using innovative methods like photogrammetry and microCT scanning, he uncovers the anatomy of ancient organisms and explores the environment they inhabited. At VU, Dr. Kelley guides students in Oceanography and introductory geology, while also mentoring senior honors students in evolutionary research. He’s also deeply involved in teaching courses on Dynamic Earth and leading field studies on Tennessee’s geology, hydrology, and natural resources.
