About the Morgan Award

The Henrietta Hickman Morgan Memorial Award for First-Year Writers was established by William Morgan in memory of his wife, and the award goes to the first-year student who submits the best sample of original writing. This long-standing, annual competition has been coordinated by the Writing Studio since 2013.

Student submit their own writing to the competition and may submit up to two entries. There are no restrictions as to length, type of writing, or subject matter. Cash prizes of $200, $150, and $100 are awarded to three students after judges examine anonymized submissions.

To learn more, visit the Writing Studio’s page on the annual Morgan Award competition.

Spotlight on Writing Studio Programming

Celebrating a successful 2024 Summer Dissertation Writers’ Retreat

Retreat participants discuss their writing goals at a small-group morning check-in with Dr. Beth Estes, Assistant Director for the Writing Studio.
Earlier this summer, from June 3-7, the Writing Studio hosted thirty graduate students from twenty-one programs for our annual week-long Summer Dissertation Writers Retreat. Our largest retreat to date brought together participants from all across campus: Students from Economics, English, and Environmental Engineering gathered alongside others from Computer Science, Special Education, and Micro-Host Interactions, just to name a few.

Designed to foster productivity, accountability, and community, the retreat saw participants make progress on significant pieces of scholarship: articles, dissertation chapters, and even defense drafts turned in by the end of the retreat!

The summer retreat was part of our annual three-part Dissertation Writers Retreat series which is made possible with the generous sponsorship of the Graduate School and the College of Arts and Science Dean’s Office.

The Writing Studio is proud to offer this support to Vanderbilt’s graduate community. If you—or one of your graduate students—would like to participate, watch this space. Our next retreat will be held during fall break!
