Writing Studio News & Notes – Faculty Edition
As we all enter the final stretch of the fall semester, the Writing Studio is here to help everyone finish strong, but it’s also the time of the semester when the Writing Studio needs your help. That’s right. It’s nomination season!
Between now and January we will be calling for faculty to nominate student writing for our annual Undergraduate Writing Symposium events and nominate your students themselves for our 2024-2025 Undergraduate Writing Consultant Positions.
Looking to finally get a multimodal assignment into your syllabus next semester? Join us Monday, Dec. 5, for a final Teaching Writing Workshop, “Incorporating Multimodal Composition.”
Keep reading for those details as well as an update on last month’s Dissertation Writers’ Retreat, employment opportunities for graduate students, and information on how to bring the Writing Studio into your classroom.
Upcoming Teaching Writing Workshop
Incorporating Multimodal Composition
Tuesday, 5 December | 12-1:30 p.m.
Join us for a workshop focused on multimodal writing assignments across the disciplines. Multimodal assignments can center writing- and research-related learning goals while allowing students to use their voices as writers in unique ways and to reach wider audiences.
Participants will examine different multimodal genres (e.g., podcasts, video essays, social media content, etc.) and brainstorm ways to develop or redevelop writing assignments. Let us know you’re coming!
Fall 2023 in-person workshops will be facilitated by Dr. Megan Minarich, Associate Director, Vanderbilt Writing Studio & Tutoring Services.

Celebration Corner: Dissertation Writers’ Retreat
With the generous support of the Graduate College and the College of Arts and Science Dean’s Office, the Writing Studio hosts a two-day retreat for dissertating writers each fall. The first of our three-part series, our fall retreat brought together thirty students from nineteen programs, ranging from Anthropology to Biomedical Engineering to Community Research and Action. Practically every horizontal surface in our office was occupied by a grad student putting a dent in a significant piece of scholarship.
The Writing Studio is proud to offer this support to Vanderbilt’s graduate community. If you—or one of your graduate students—would like to participate, watch this space. Our next retreat will be held during spring break, and we’re eager to help you move your major projects forward!
Help Wanted: Hiring Clerks for Spring 2024
Office clerk acts as the front-desk representative in our main office at Edgehill and our satellite office in the Commons Center. Clerks oversee the opening and/or closing of the office and assist clients, consultants, and tutors with their needs.
Interested applicants should visit Vanderbilt’s Student Employment page and navigate to HireADore to find the listing (search “Office Clerk”). The position is eligible for Federal Work Study participants.
